The Salters’ Institute has continued its commitment to creating fair, transparent and accessible opportunities across science education through a dedicated Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) development programme delivered in partnership with Better Generation Solutions.
Facilitated by Associate Consultant Karen Harvey-Cooke, the session formed part of the Institute’s wider review of policies, processes and practices, ensuring that programmes and opportunities remain accessible to the broadest possible community of applicants, teachers and learners.
The workshop provided an opportunity for participants to explore how equity and inclusion can be embedded throughout organisational systems and decision-making processes, moving beyond compliance-focused approaches towards meaningful and sustainable change.
A key theme emerging from the discussions was the Institute’s willingness to critically examine existing practices, invite constructive challenge and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. This openness to reflection and development reflects an organisational culture committed to ensuring that future programmes continue to support excellence while widening participation across the sciences.
The discussions also highlighted the close relationship between inclusive practice and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By strengthening pathways into science and ensuring opportunities are accessible to a wider range of individuals, organisations can contribute to both educational excellence and broader societal outcomes.
The Salters’ Institute has a long-standing reputation for supporting chemistry education and inspiring future generations of scientists. Its ongoing focus on reviewing and enhancing organisational practices reflects a commitment to ensuring that these opportunities remain relevant, equitable and accessible within an evolving educational landscape.
Better Generation Solutions is proud to support organisations seeking to translate their values into action through practical, evidence-informed approaches to organisational development, sustainability and inclusion.
The consultancy would like to thank the Salters’ Institute team for their openness, energy and engagement throughout the session, and Liam Thomas for his leadership and support in commissioning this important piece of work.
